General Question and Answer Archive

I am a straight female and my brother is gay. The last time he came to visit, the subject of marriage came up. My brother has been out for over 30 years so clearly I understood this to be really bothering him. I was saying my goodbye for the evening when he asked me in what ways I support his right to be gay. I really didn’t have an answer. How do other family members support the GLBT folks on this forum? I feel like there is more I can do.

Thanks for the great question! There are many ways to show your support for your brother and other GLBT’s. Here’s a link to Straight for Equality’s website: http://community.pflag.org/page.aspx?pid=566

Also, PFLAG’s site is a great resource as well: pflag.org

I think the biggest thing that we and our allies can do to support each other, is to be out. By that I mean talk candidly to others when the issue comes up. It can be hard even for a straight person to support equality in a public setting, especially when you’re the lone standout in the crowd. Also, vote for office seekers who support equality.
