General Question and Answer Archive

When my mother died and my father left us, I was 15 and my little brother was 10. I quit school, got a job, and provided income and care to raise my brother for 4 yrs until our father came back. I thought my brother and I were close. But, he has come out of the closet to our older sisters (who all left us to die as well) and hasn’t even mumbled this possibility to me. Our oldest sister brags about how much he tells her and asks if he told me yet. Initially, I was inclined to assume she was lying, but now I believe this to be true. He is definitely gay. I feel like it may be my fault too. I didn’t know how to take care of a kid. So my question is do you think he hates me because he isn’t including me in on his life? Or do you think he blaims me for somehow making him gay? I can’t say I tried my best to be a good sister, but I know he wouldn’t be alive without the food and shelter I provided him. Please help it is eatting me up. Thanks.

You did not make your brother gay. We are born with our sexual orientation. Our environment is not a determinant of our sexual orientation, but it can be significant in when and how a person comes out. Your brother may not have felt safe coming out at a younger age but is now feeling more comfortable with himself and his surroundings to identify as a gay person. Coming out is a process and people come out in different ways. Some people find it easier to come out to those around them before they come out to their parents or close loved ones, for fear of rejection. That may be the case here. A simple reinforcement of your unconditional love for your brother should fix this. Kudos to you for stepping up and taking care of your brother when no one else would. Your are a special person and the world needs more people like you. All the best…
