Transgender Question and Answer Archive

I understand that much of gender characteristics are based on societal norms, like the color of clothes worn. I have struggled as a man not quite as masculine as society would like; I simply accepted that such norms were culturally relative, and that personality and preference is individual. But what I don’t understand is how physical appearance can be part of this struggle for transgender people: it is one thing to prefer a stereotype over another, but being bothered by having a certain body part or amount of hair seems to me to be a deeper issue, something related to disorders regarding physical body image like anorexia, where perhaps social pressure to identify with a certain group of people makes you force yourself to become like them.
