Transgender Question and Answer Archive

I’m 14, girl in a boy’s grotesque body. Recently I’ve confirmed to my self that I am definitely transgender. I only have one problem: I don’t know how to come out. My parents are divorced; My mom is really accepting; my dad has really high expectations and is not LGBT accepting, and I guess you could say I have ‘daddy issues’. I also have an old really good friend my age who is a Mormon, and a good friend korean girl my age who knows I have some kind of secret. I don’t know what to do, but I know I can’t do nothing. My school is private Christian in rebublican Georgia, so I’m afraid of losing my only friends left. Can anyone help me here? I’m scared and worried.

You should only come out when it is safe for you do so. That may mean waiting until you go off to college or move out on your own. I know being 14 you should be able to do what all young people your age do…going to school, talking about bf’s and gf’s, learning about your body, socializing, etc.. This is an important time in your life. But, you must only come out if you feel safe to do so. Even telling your good friend can have consequences if she tells other people. And what 14 yr. old girl can hold secrets? Check out this link for a couple of good documentaries about transgendered youth in Georgia high schools: http://www.georgiasafeschoolscoalition.org/ .
