General Question and Answer Archive

Okay, so. I am a straight female. One of my particularly close friends is a gay male (I’ll call him Sean). We’re both in our early 20s. We have several other mutual friends/acquaintances who are either gay or transgender, and occasionally Sean’s choice of conversation will turn to mocking anything related to the various forms of LGBT activism that these friends are involved in or have expressed. Additionally, he will accuse (in private conversation with myself) our transitioning transgendered friends of “faking it”, insomuch as they are truly gay, but are taking an easier, more socially acceptable route by changing their gender. He will also express derision (again, privately) towards any of our gay friends who don’t conform to their traditionally gendered roles (eg, butch lesbians, very femme guys). He also does not believe that bisexuality is a valid orientation (“Bi now, gay later” is how he put it). I am very much involved and interested in various social justice movements/activism, so I’m painfully aware how straight privilege-y it would be of me to directly call him out on his ignorance about this stuff. I will meekly defend these friends in conversation, but I’m worried about appearing condescending. On a more personal level, I just don’t want to hear this kind of negative talk about my friends! From anyone! Especially when it comes to their orientation(s). If this were a straight friend saying this sort of stuff, I’d be all over them. But because it’s Sean…I’m a little confused as to where the boundaries are.  Do I let things stay the way they are? Do I call him out the next time he does this? Or am I a total asshole for even thinking about calling him out? Thanks in advance.

Val

Please directly call him out on his ignorance about this stuff. You will be doing us all and humanity a favor. Thank you, sincerely. There are no boundaries. We LGBTQ's can be just as ignorant on issues, including LGBTQ stuff, as any straight person. We are same sex oriented, or identify as another gender, that is all.
