How can a person be bisexual?

Sexual orientation is an individual thing, with many different factors coming in to play for each person. For some, sexual orientation is either black or white, gay or straight, while for others, it can be shades of gray, or fluid, as in the case with some bisexual people. Some bisexual people are attracted to both sexes, but never act upon their same sex attraction, while others explore with both sexes, while even some only engage with same sex individuals, but acknowledge their attraction to the opposite sex. Many bisexual people find that love/attraction is about people, and not about gender. Some bisexual people find that it's just who they are- that they were just born that way - and have been attracted to both sexes for as long as they can remember; others find that their bisexuality is rooted in deep wounding from not having received enough nurturing from their same-sex parent. Regardless of the "cause" or "how", bisexuality is common. (Some people say it's the silent majority.) Many people at some point in their lives either think about or act upon some sort of sexual encounter with the same sex, regardless of how they define their sexual orientation. Some bisexuals define themselves by that label throughout their lives, while others may identify as bisexual, and then switch their label to gay or straight, depending upon who they are in an intimate relationship with.
