Great question. When I came out to my mom as bisexual this confused her more than if I would have just said that I was gay. She had come to accept the idea that people were born gay - I tried to explain to her that sexuality is fluid.

I would say that if the conversation ever comes up where you find they are pigeonholing you into just being gay - let them know that you are open to meeting a man or a woman. But be warned that this may lead them to always hope that you end of with someone of the opposite sex and it may make it harder for them to accept if you end of with someone of the same sex.
