Aside from just coming out and asking him, which could go either way and cause other problems, you might try getting to know him first, and if you have a common interest, that could be the ice breaker. You could end up with a cool friend at the least.

Ask him... Be straight up. Ask him. Kids your age have no problem with expressing their truth. Nothing beats a fail but a try...
