What is the purpose of a Commitment Ceremony? Can the agreement be disolved?

Kelly

The purpose of a commitment ceremony is to allow two people who are in love to come together and declare their love and commitment for one another. Just as straight people do when they get married. Unfortunately in most States it is still not legal for gay marriage or civil unions so instead of waiting for hell to freeze over they decide to have a ceremony to celebrate their formal commitment. Commitment ceremonies are not legally binding and can be dissolved at anytime the couple decides to part ways. Commitment ceremonies are just not for gay people - straight people have commitment ceremonies as well.

If you are asking because it is your intention to create an estate with your loved one then I would highly recommend that you talk to an attorney who specializes in estate planning. For estate planning purposes it is important to consider how two people will be joined. A commitment ceremony is a union of two people in symbol alone. It is an affirmation of union between two people. It is not legally binding therefore no legal document is needed to dissolve the commitment. However there are Dissolution of Commitment forms to terminate the commitment.
