I think the first step would be to come out to him, that is if you feel safe doing so. Just realize that once you let the cat out of the bag - more people will find out.
I think if he knows you are gay then he may feel comfortable to come out to you. Ask him if there's anyone he's interested in, any girls or guys? Ask him if he ever thought of being with a guy? Gauge his reactions. Good luck.
