General Question and Answer Archive

Howdy Y’all I was wondering a few things regarding gay marriage as I have never been to one, am not a gay person (am heterosexual, and don’t know anyone personally that is gay (I have worked for gay clients and had a gay barber, but they were acquaintances and friends, not a close friend or anything). I had a few questions regarding gay relationships and marriage as I am doing research because I am thinking of writing a fictional story about a gay couple and the family they create, so wanted to be realistic: 1) When gay people get married, is there a proposal done with a ring? If so, who does the proposal? 2) How does the marriage certificate work? For example in a heterosexual marriage, the couple would take the surname of the male, and her original surname would be her maiden name. Who’s surname is utilized on the certificate and how is it decided? 3) How does a gay couple decide where to live? 4) Could I hear some stories about how a gay couple adopts (such as the process in what they go through for it)? 5) If a gay couple uses a surrogate, does the mother still remain as part of the child’s life? 6) If a gay couple does indeed adopt a child into the family, what are some of the kid’s experiences? Does some of the prejudice against gay people ever affect the child that is adopted? Does the child every inquire about where he/she came from, and if truth is given, does she/he ever try to find out whom their birth parents are? 7) Do any gay couples adopt interracially? for example a black gay couple adopts an asian baby, or vice versa? Thanks for letting me ask questions as I am uninformed on the subject.
