I didn't know for sure that I was bi until I fell in love with my first girlfriend when I was 30. I had my first girl crush on a friend in college but nothing ever happened and I didn't think much more of it at the time. I just went on with life and never really questioned my sexuality. When I was growing up the women that you "knew" were in fact lesbians were very butch and while there is nothing wrong with strong butch lesbians I didn't see myself as one of them nor was I attracted to them. I think that's why I didn't probe deeper into what it meant that I was attracted to a girl. We just had a strong connection and I chopped it up to confusing strong feelings of friendship for something more. For me it's not about dating a guy or a girl, it's about the person. It doesn't matter what package they come in.
