Lesbian Question and Answer Archive

To start off, I’m 16, and am very new to the whole concept of being in a mature relationship. So I’m sort of with this girl right now, let’s call her N. We’re not really to the point where we really call each other girlfriends. We’ve kissed and held hands and we’re going to prom together, which is in less than a week. The only thing is, we really don’t have a lot in common, and honestly, I don’t think I’m that super into her like that. I also happen to really like this other girl, K… who just so happens to be in the same group that we’re going to prom with. I really want to make progress with K, but I really don’t want to hurt N’s feelings. N has had a lot of not so great stuff happen in her life, and I don’t want this to be another thing to add to her already-long-enough list. I obviously won’t break anything to her before prom this weekend, but I don’t want to wait too long. Should I talk to her at prom, or would that just be a terrible idea, considering it’s her senior prom? I don’t want prom to turn out to be a horrible memory for either her of me, but I just don’t know what to do. I guess, in short, I need some way to tell N that we should be just friends, and some way to show K that I want to be more than friends. Thanks so much, Confused Lesbian

You should wait till after prom. Furthermore, you should muster all the maturity that you can, to not bring anything up at prom or cause any drama. You’re right that should want only happy memories of your prom for both you and N.
