Lesbian Question and Answer Archive

I am a 22 year old female. My girlfriend is 25. We have been together 7 years. My girlfriend has always told me she feels as if she should have been born a guy. I know she should have also. Her baby pics/family videos say it all. We’re discussing sex reassignment surgery. If she gets it done, and turns male, and I stay with her, what would others label me as? Straight, bi, lesbian? And what would my girlfriend be? The whole transgender thing is new to me. We always considered ourselves lesbian.

From what you’ve written it sounds like your partner has always identified as a male, even though you say you both consider yourselves lesbians, so I wouldn’t worry about labels too much. It’s more about the person than the gender and labels are just so hard to put on people. For example, can you not be a lesbian whose partner happens to be male? What if that is your only male partner, who happened to transitioned earlier? I would say you are still a lesbian, but only you can answer that question.

Social labels are mostly just a fun way to concisely package a longer statement. I dunno what you would like to be called in your projected future situation, but I myself am transgender male-to-female, and I am very into other women. I don’t use the term often myself, but I have heard another person in my position call herself “transbian,” as in a transgender lesbian. It’s kinda cute =)
